Bit of an old post here - but comes up high in Google and the topic has received some resurgence recently. As such we have decided to test the "forced vs unforced" situation using real sites (with thousands / sometimes tens of thousands of unique visitors) - you can read about the experiments here - http://www.forcedregistration.com (doing a bit of house cleaning still, don't mind the mess. Anyways - if you want to get past the opinions and are an numbers kind of person like I am - you might want to rethink your strategy once you have subscribed to some of the test case blogs.

I have tried it both ways only to view MLS listings which is of course what most are looking for. I have stuck with a very basic instant registration. They do get to see 2 listings in full as a teaser before requiring the registration. They also get the added benefit by registering to save their searches and properties of interest and to get automatic updates.

It is my personal preference and has worked for me.

Forced signup gives consumers a bad vibe. It would probably be similar to a mall retailer asking for ID at the door. Would anyone show their drivers licence just to look at a pair of jeans?

Whoops, cut myself off there...

I think the decision to require registration or not may be quite dependent on the local market. Basically if you are in a market where most sites do not require it, you probably shouldn't either. If most do require it, then you may do better with it.

Bottom line: test it.
