I think a lot of people are writing the iPad off too fast. If you look at it for what it is, a mobile entertainment device, and what is not, a netbook or a laptop, you will find many people buying it for that reason. I want one for the e-reader. People are paying as much for a Kindle as the base iPad and if you gauge the popularity of e-readers as category alone, the iPad could easily succeed on that functionality alone. It seems as if my predictions on that front have Amazon pretty worried too http://mashable.com/2010/01/30/amazon-macmillan/ As deep as I have been into the tech world for almost 20 years, I still like the feel of a traditional planner. The iPad interfaces are created to emulate the things we have used for years. I believe this device will be looked at by people who have no real use for a computer, like my parents, as something they could feel comfortable using. My mom would love to keep up with everyone on Facebook, but even a Mac is just too much for her. Using her fingers just like she would with a book and seeing an interface that she is familiar with might change that. One thing I agree with is the lack of the web cam though. That was a major faux pas on Apple's part and will most certainly have an impact on their initial sales. I've seen more people say they are waiting on V 2.0 than people that said they would buy one now. Overall, I think Apple did a poor job of positioning the iPad and should have done more to say it's in a category of it's own. In the world of marketing if you tout something as magical and revolutionary, you've built yourself a helluva mountain to climb. It would be an easier mountain to climb if they started telling people they built the mountain too.

I'm still trying to figure out why I need this. I already have gadgets that perform every function better than the iPad. Plus, I'm sure the keyboard being on the screen would drive me bananas and leave me longing for my laptop.

I'm pretty sure the OS is the same, so you may have issues still. Maybe being able to maximize the screen will resolve the issue. People will need to realize this is a mobile device, not a full fledged PC. It's certainly the future of one though. Won't be long and everything will live in the Cloud and we will be using devices like this to access everything we need. The day I can stitch a panorama of 5 - 32mb raw files and post edit it with photoshop on something like a tablet will be very cool indeed.
