The Google domination of all things online continues, as they announced that you can now open and edit all Microsoft® Word files that you receive as attachments in Gmail.

From the Google blog: “You can now view them with a single click — no need to download, save, and open files with a desktop application when you just want read them. The Google Docs viewer that allows you to view .pdf, .ppt, and .tiff files in your browser now supports .doc and .docx formats too.”

All you have to do is click the “View” link at the bottom of your Gmail, and you can edit the file by clicking “Edit online.”

So now that you can use Excel, Word, and Powerpoint online through Google Docs, do you even need to buy MS office anymore? For the fairly simple tasks that real estate agents and brokers perform everyday, what functions does the desktop version of office provide that the Google cloud doesn’t?

[...] Admit it, you want to hate Google as they become more and more part of our life, I do too. But you probably find yourself like me loving them more and more instead. When Microsoft took over our lives and we could not operate without it. We hated them because every year we had to shell out a few hundred bucks for some upgrade. This is definitely a nice feature for a small business, but it certainly won't stop large businesses from using Microsoft Office. I'd imagine most large corporations would be unlikely to move their email hosting to Gmail.

Google hasn't exactly been the best protector of privacy. I wouldn't risk my company's secure data on Gmail's servers.

I use Google Docs, and I like Google Docs. But, I can't see Google Docs replacing MS Suite…Yet. Almost everyone still uses MS Suite, and you have to “go with the flow.”

Not so ready to give up MS word just yet, but it is getting closer. I love Google docs because it is so easy to share and work collaboratively on a project. I have had one sale where I shared google docs with the other agent so we both followed the exact same time line, share certain docs, and it worked fabulously. Of course, it requires a willingness on both sides!

I like Google Docs, instead of sending by mail every day the updated files I’ve just created a shared docs and it is making my work very fast.
