In Google Webmaster and other sites, we continue to get a message that they are unable to locate sitemap.xml or General HTTP error: 404 not found. I thought this was important for our site?

If a site is well optimized, and indexable, I don’t think a sitemap will help that much.

I think it’s pretty clear a sitemap will not help your site or pages RANK higher. Only links (internal & external) will do that.

Here is some further info from Google itself – http://groups.google.com/group/Google_Webmaster_Help-Indexing/browse_thread/thread/2bace1a95e24fb87?pli=1

That said, I can look into this again.

Understood. Question was not in reference to ranking. It more to structure and resolving errors on the site — there are a TON! its probably a simple fix, but Google seems to believe Verifying your site and resolution of sitemap errors are important. If Google is unable to verify site, sitemaps, etc., what else is wrong? Its worrisome if all I see are errors.
