After having shut down hacked iPhones, it turns out Apple is focused on creating an open platform for the iPhone afterall –

Third Party Applications on the iPhone

Let me just say it: We want native third party applications on the iPhone, and we plan to have an SDK in developers’ hands in February. We are excited about creating a vibrant third party developer community around the iPhone and enabling hundreds of new applications for our users. With our revolutionary multi-touch interface, powerful hardware and advanced software architecture, we believe we have created the best mobile platform ever for developers.

It’ll be interesting to see the resulting innovation from the real estate industry in 2008. Any ideas about potential real estate specific apps? I’m guessing we’ll see a number of both consumer facing applications as well as apps geared towards helping real estate professionals manage their business on the go.

Drew, this will be important in the future. As more and more Realtors and Consumers start using Iphones, it will become more important to focus on this. For now, we are focused on making sure everything works in Safari. That way, everything will work on the Iphone as well. Any app on the web is an app that will work with your iphone or any other phone as well. So developing an app specifically for the iphone doesn’t make a whole lot of sense right now. We’ll see if that changes in the future.

The announcement of the SDK (software development kit) is welcome news. The iPhone already comes preinstalled with the best real estate application, Video Podcasts via iTunes. :)

RealtyJuggler Desktop is currently available for the iPhone. It’s organizational software for real estate agents. Its web based and runs on the iPphoe as well as from any modern Internet browser.
